A section of Artondale Drive NW near Gig Harbor will be closed from 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11 to 6 a.m. Friday, Oct. 12 as part of an area road construction project.
Artondale Drive NW will be closed from Wollochet Drive NW to 500 feet west of the intersection so crews can pave the road. To avoid the closure, drivers that planned to travel through the Artondale Drive intersection should turn onto 70th Avenue NW, take a left onto 40th Street NW and continue north onto Wollochet Drive NW.
"We recognize this project has affected drivers through various traffic delays throughout the work, and we would like to thank local residents for their patience and cooperation as we near the completion of this project," said Henry Gertje, Pierce County Public Works and Utilities construction engineering supervisor.
Upcoming work and traffic impactsBeginning Oct. 15, weather permitting, the following areas will be paved during the daytime:• The intersection of Timberlane Lane NW and Wollochet Drive NW (across from Eastbay Drive)• Wollochet Drive NW between Artondale Drive NW and 40th Street NW
Delays are expected as equipment and materials are moved in and out of the work zone.
Part of a larger projectThe county is improving approximately a mile of Wollochet Drive NW from 40th Street NW to East Bay Drive NW. Work on the project began in the summer of 2010, and is expected to be complete in the spring of 2013.
Improvements, designed to relieve traffic congestion, include:• Expanding the roadway to three lanes between 40th Street NW and Artondale Drive NW.• Expanding the roadway to four lanes between Artondale Drive NW and East Bay Drive NW.• Adding turn lanes at intersections.• Adding concrete curbs, gutter, sidewalks and street lighting.• Adding an enclosed storm drain system as well as stormwater treatment.• Improving the existing traffic signals at 40th Street NW, Artondale Drive NW, and East Bay Drive NW.
Tucci & Sons Inc. is the contractor. The contract amount for the project is approximately $6.5 million.
