3 Superior Court judges to be sworn in Jan. 4

Three newly elected Pierce County Superior Court judges will have their joint swearing-in ceremony on Friday, Jan. 4.

The ceremony, which is open to the public, will be held at 4 p.m. in Courtroom 100 of the County-City Building, 930 Tacoma Ave. S. A reception will follow in the Jury Assembly Room, room 123.

Here is a brief look at the newcomers to the Superior Court bench:

Judge-elect Stan J. Rumbaugh received his law degree from the University of Puget Sound in 1978. He has tried hundreds of cases in private practice. Judge-elect Rumbaugh has been on the Board of Governors for the Washington State Trial Lawyers Association for nine years and was Washington State Law and Politics magazine’s Super Lawyer four different years. His civic involvement includes service on the Tacoma Housing Authority Board of Commissioners, Bates Technical College Board of Trustees, Centro Latino Board of Directors, Planned Parenthood of Western Washington Board of Directors, governor’s task force on longterm disability, the City of Tacoma Human Services Strategic Planning Group, the World Trade Council, and moderator for the PBS television program “South Sound View.”

Judge-elect Jack F. Nevin received his law degree from Gonzaga University. He was appointed to the Pierce County District Court Bench in 1997. Judge-elect Nevin was the Presiding Judge of the United Nations Detention Review Commission Kosovo in 2001 and was on active and reserve duty with the Judge Advocate General’s Corps United States Army from 1978 to 2009. Judge-elect Nevin also served as Chief Judge (IMA) United States Army Court of Criminal Appeals and was the Commanding General of the US Army Reserve Legal Command (Prov). His civic involvement includes service on the State of Washington Board of Judicial Administration, faculty at the Washington State Judicial College, Adjunct Professor for Trial Advocacy at Seattle University School of Law, the Tacoma Narrows Rotary, Board of Directors for the Family Renewal Shelter, Board of Advisors for Gonzaga University School of Law, and Paint Tacoma Beautiful.

Judge-elect Jerry T. Costello was born and raised in Illinois. He is a 1983 graduate of California Western School of Law and began his career in the U.S. Navy JAG Corps, which brought him to Seattle and Guam. Following his military service, Judge-elect Costello did civil litigation work with Bogle & Gates in Seattle. From 1989 until present, he has worked as a Pierce County Deputy Prosecutor, handling assignments including Chief Criminal Deputy, Chief Administrative Deputy, Lead Attorney for homicide cases and Special Assistant United States Attorney. Judge-elect Costello is married to Kris Costello and they have two daughters, Jessica and Keri. When not working, Judge-elect Costello might be found fly casting for trout.
