Doing Business in Pierce County

Pierce County is home to businesses large and small and all are appreciated for their contribution to the County’s economic well-being. The Pierce County Economic Development Department and its partners work together to encourage and assist small, entrepreneurial firms to thrive and grow. In each newsletter we feature one of these companies.

HeliTrak was incorporated in 2007 by longtime friends, aeronautical engineers, and avid pilots, John Mercer and Peter Hambling. Their goal was to create the most advanced safety devices and autopilot systems for rotary wing aircraft (e.g. helicopters). Originally located in Kent, the business moved to the Pierce County Narrows Airport in 2011. The airport provided what they needed: adequate office space for the 20 engineers developing the Collective Pull-Down (CPD) device and autopilot systems, a place to flight test instruments, plus access to additional space to later produce the instruments. Full article...

Tourism Strategic Planning Underway

Tourism is an important industry in Pierce County. Visitors come from all over the country and even all over the world to visit our mountain, golf our courses, kayak and fish our shores, visit our museums and fairs, and sample our rhubarb pie, Almond Roca, craft beers and distilled spirits.
 
The Economic Development Department administers the funds generated by the tourism industry in the form of taxes and fees paid on overnight stays. Two advisory boards recommend how these funds should be invested – the Lodging Tax Advisory Committee and the Tourism Promotion Area Commission. The boards want to be strategic about investing these funds and have undertaken a multi-step process to develop a strategic plan. Full article...

Opening Tour Held at New Paver Facility in Frederickson

Oldcastle APG West held an opening tour of their new paver facility on April 3rd for Pierce County officials. The tour provided a great opportunity for the company, general contractor, and officials, including Pierce County Executive Bruce Dammeier, to celebrate the project. Full article...
