How Do I
Adoptions Without An Attorney (Pro Se)
Representing Yourself
Petitioners with stepparent or relative adoptions can complete their adoptions without the assistance of an attorney but are considered to be representing themselves (pro se). If the adoption will be contested or the whereabouts of one of the birth parents is not known, it is strongly recommended that an adoption attorney be retained.

This website will discuss the procedure for adoptions with a consenting parent. Pierce County Adoptions can provide some procedural assistance but cannot give legal advice.

Legal Forms
Copies of the legal forms can be obtained at the Pierce County Law Library in the County-City Building at:
930 Tacoma Ave. S.
Tacoma, WA 98402

There is a nominal fee to copy these forms.

There are paralegal and online businesses that will create the forms for you. Check them out carefully before hiring them. Judge Advocate General’s Corps (JAG) will create the forms for stepparent adoptions for military personnel at no charge.
