Opportunity on the Pierce County Arts Commission

The Pierce County Arts Commission was formed in 1985 to serve as a volunteer advisory group to Pierce County government. The commission is appointed for their interest, experience, and support of the arts.

Commissioners are appointed by the executive and confirmed by the County Council for three-year terms. Each council district is represented by one commissioner, additional commissioners serve at-large.

Commission Vacancies 
The Pierce County Economic Development Department is seeking a citizen volunteer to serve on its nine member Arts Commission (PCAC) for a three-year term. Successful candidates will be appointed by the County Executive and confirmed by the County Council. Candidates are being recruited from District 2 (visit the link to see if you reside within this district). 

The PCAC is recognized by the State of Washington and Pierce County for the important role it plays in delivering programs and services that stimulate participation and growth in the arts throughout Pierce County. Ideal candidates should possess acknowledged accomplishments in one or more of the following fields: architecture, art criticism, art education, history, dance, communicative arts, theatre, heritage arts, landscape architecture, music, painting, photography, planning, sculpture, or ethnic arts or have publicly demonstrated a deep interest in and appreciation of cultural and artistic activities. 

Meetings are held on the 2nd Thursday of Jan, Apr, July, and October from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. Additional meetings may be held.

About Joyce McDonald

Councilmember Joyce McDonald was elected to represent the people of Council District 2 in November 2008. District 2 includes the communities of:


Political Involvement

Before being elected to the County Council, Joyce spent five terms in the Washington State House of Representatives. She served as ranking member of the Capital Budget Committee and a member of the Trade and Economic Development, Appropriations, and Juvenile Justice and Family Law committees. She was twice recognized by the Washington State Council of Police and Sheriffs as "Legislator of the Year" for providing increased school safety, tighter sex offender laws and tougher drunk driving and meth-lab penalties. Joyce also was named a "2007 Woman of Influence" by The Business Examiner.

Education History & Personal Background
She graduated magna cum laude from Northwest College with a degree in organizational management and received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Pierce College. She has been actively involved in her community as a member of Main Street Association and the Chamber of Commerce. Joyce served as PTA and Youth Center president, kids' soccer and softball coach, and a foster parent and parent aid.

Joyce was born and raised in Scotland, is a passionate naturalized American and demonstrates a great love of country in every challenge she undertakes. Joyce and her husband Gary have four grown children and 10 grandchildren who all live in Pierce County. Joyce is committed to making Pierce County a great place to live, work and raise a family.
