draft Spanaway Lake Watershed Characterization
has been released for review. The advisory committee is working to review it and provide recommendations that will help formulate the Spanaway Lake Management Plan.
About the Project
The Spanaway Lake Management Plan is an effort to determine how to protect and improve water quality and to continue providing habitat for wildlife, fish and other aquatic species. Success of the plan is dependent, in part, on support and input from people interested in the lake. State funding made possible by Representative David Sawyer and support from County Executive Pat McCarthy is moving the management plan forward.
Work on the Spanaway Lake Management Plan will continue through December 2016. Pierce County and partners spent most of 2015 collecting water quality monitoring data from the lake, groundwater wells and Coffee and Spanaway creeks. Monitoring results will help identify the most significant water quality impacts in Spanaway Lake, both man-made and natural.
The data results will be used to create a summary of the water quality for Spanaway Lake and for the entire Spanaway Lake watershed. The summary will describe our understanding of the lake water and phosphorus budgets. The summary will also include our understanding of the potential nutrient and bacteria sources. Final lake characterization will be completed and ready for public review in Fall 2016.
The Spanaway Lake Management Plan Advisory Group made up of area residents and other stakeholders was formed in June 2016 to provide the county with feedback as the plan is developed. Committee meetings are open to the public, and meeting agendas and other information will be posted to this webpage as it becomes available.
