Note About Agriculture Resource Land (ARL) Amendments
Pierce County is required by State law to preserve land that has the right type of soils and size to support farming.  These properties are currently designated as Agricultural Resource Lands, also known as ARL.

In recent years, there have been various questions about Pierce County’s approach to preserving farmland.  The County Council hired a consultant team earlier this year to evaluate how the County designates ARL lands.  The recommendations from this work is in a study titled “A Fresh Look at Pierce County Agriculture.” The recommendation is now a proposal through the 2016 Comprehensive Plan Amendments.  This proposal includes changing the criteria for soil type and property size.

If the proposed changes are adopted by the County, some properties will be changed to ARL, and some will be changed from ARL to another rural zone. You can figure out which properties are affected using the “Resources” below.

Please Note:  If you received a letter notifying you of a change within 300 feet, your property is not proposed to have its zoning changed.

The ARL Amendment is Application No. 844105 (listed under Area-Wide Map, Text, and Community Plan Amendments).  Information meetings will be held in November. Please refer to the Public Meetings page for specific dates, times, and locations.
