 About the Project

Work will begin early summer on the east segment of the South Prairie to Buckley section (see project map).  The east segment is an unimproved section of the Foothills Trail and opened in 2008.

Construction work along this segment includes paving and installing pin-pile bridge sections over the wet portions of the trail alignment and constructing a new small bridge over an intermittent stream.

 Funding Partners

The construction project is jointly funded by Pierce County; Federal Highways Administration/Washington State Department of Transportation, Puget Sound Regional Council, Rural Town Centers and Corridors grant; Washington Recreation and Conservation Office WWRP trail grant; and a gracious donation from the Foothills Rails to Trails Coalition.

These agencies helped fund the construction of this corridor which is an integral part of the Foothills National Recreation Trail and the Pierce County Regional Trail system.

 South Prairie to Buckley

The east segment is just a portion of the longer South Prairie to Buckley trail alignment that is three separate projects. The projects include (see project map for details): the east segment; the switchback bridge (which is currently labeled bridge out); and the west segment. The east segment replaces the current muddy conditions along the trail with a solid surface suitable for pedestrians, bicycles, equestrians, and other non-motorized trail users.  Native wetland plantings will be installed along the east segment corridor, preserving and improving this scenic travel corridor.

The South Prairie to Buckley full alignment will provide the safety of a separated non-motorized corridor as it parallels very busy state highways with minimal shoulders. Once the full alignment is completed, trail users will have a much improved trail experience. The full project enhances the aesthetic aspects of the non-motorized travel experience as it gradually climbs from the Orting Valley through forests, along stream corridors, and next to wetlands, to the Cascade Foothills in Buckley.
