Division Responsibilities & Services
The District Court division of the Pierce County Department of Assigned Counsel (DAC) represents adult indigent defendants facing criminal allegations in Pierce County District Court.

Pretrial Services will screen in-custody defendants for appointed counsel prior to the first court appearance (arraignment). For out-of-custody defendants, appointed counsel may be requested from the Court at arraignment. If requested, the court will perform an initial screening and may appoint counsel, or may refer the defendant for further screening by Pretrial Services.

If you qualify for a public defender, DAC will enter a Notice of Appearance. DAC will notify you who the attorney will be and how you can contact your attorney.
