State Redistricting Commission

The State Redistricting Commission is responsible for the drawing of Congressional and Legislative lines for Washington State.

Pierce County Districting Committee

  • Pierce County consists of seven council districts.
  • Districts are to be compact and contiguous in territory and composed of geographic units and natural communities.
  • Councilmembers shall be residents and registered voters of their district for at least one year immediately prior to filing and shall maintain residency in the district for the term of office.
  • No council district boundary change shall disqualify the Councilmember from holding office during the remainder of the term of office.
  • The County Council is responsible for appointing a Districting Committee.
  • The committee will be appointed in the spring of 2011.
  • The council shall appoint two persons from each major political party, from a list of five individuals submitted by the party's central committee.
  • The four committee members shall appoint a fifth member who shall serve as chair.
  • The districting committee, within 30 days of its appointment, shall meet and appoint a Districting Master.
  • Within two months, after appointment, the Districting Master shall draw a redistricting plan for the County which shall be submitted to the committee for adoption.
  • The districting committee has 15 days to adopt or amend the plan. Amendment requires four affirmative votes.

Local Jurisdictions

  • Local jurisdictions with internal districts are required to redraw or adjust their boundaries.
  • Local jurisdictions are responsible for preparing, finalizing and adopting the new boundaries.
  • No later than eight months after the receipt of census data, the jurisdiction shall prepare a redistricting plan.
  • Districts shall be nearly equal in population.
  • Each district shall be as compact as possible.
  • Each district shall consist of a geographically contiguous area.
  • Population data may not be used to favor or disfavor any racial group or political party.
  • Boundaries shall coincide with existing recognized natural boundaries and to the extent possible, preserve existing communities of related and mutual interest.
  • At least one public hearing shall be held prior to adoption of the plan.
  • Adopted plans are provided to the Pierce County Auditor's Office.

Cities in Pierce County required to redistrict:

  • City of Tacoma (5 districts)
  • City of Puyallup (3 districts)
  • City of Bonney Lake (5 districts)

School districts in Pierce County required to redistrict.

  • School District No. 2 (Yelm)
  • School District No. 320 (Sumner)
  • School District No. 343 (Dieringer)
  • School District No. 344 (Orting)
  • School District No. 400 (Clover Park)
  • School District No. 401 (Peninsula)
  • School District No. 402 (Franklin Pierce)
  • School District No. 403 (Bethel)
  • School District No. 404 (Eatonville)
  • School District No. 408 (Auburn)
  • School District No. 416 (White River)
  • School District No. 417 (Fife)
