Knockout Knotweed!

This year we have reason to celebrate because every parcel participating in this project was treated for Knotweed! With the participation of property owners, Pierce County Public Works and Utilities treated over 11 miles of waterways along Chambers Creek, Flett Creek and Leach Creek. This means that we reached our project goal of treating every participating parcel.

In 2011 we will continue knotweed treatment along waterways in the project area and continue restoration planning and plantings on Pierce County property located in the Chambers Creek Canyon.

If you are interested in upcoming knotweed restoration events or have questions regarding this project please contact Shelly Eisenbarth at 253-798-3086.

In July, 2008, Pierce County Public Works and Utilities began a project to locate and control the spread of Japanese knotweed in the Chambers Creek Canyon. The project is crucial to preserving native plant species and habitat in the Chambers Creek Canyon. Japanese knotweed is identified as a Class B Weed by the Washington State Noxious Weed Control Board. Knotweed reduces biodiversity by shading out native vegetation and altering habitats. It can also increase risk of flooding through dead stems washed into creek and stream channels. If the problem is left untreated, there is an increased risk of soil erosion and bank instability following the removal of established stands in riparian areas. Therefore it is prudent to control knotweed as early as possible.

Partners in the project include:
· Washington Department of Natural Resources
· Pierce County Noxious Weed Control Board
· Pierce Conservation District
· City of University Place
· City of Lakewood
· Clover Park Technical College
· Clover Park High School
· Chambers Creek Foundation
· Chambers-Clover Creek Watershed Council

As the project progresses there may be opportunities for additional volunteers to assist with surveying and monitoring for knotweed infestations. For more information about the project please contact a Chambers Creek Properties Representative at 798-4050 or email us.
