The updated Pierce County Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan is in the process of being reviewed by the State of Washington and FEMA for content and compliance. Each approved mitigation plan must be reviewed and adopted every five years. The Emergency Management Department has facilitated the review and update of the existing (2004)Pierce County Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan.

The following sections of the updated Pierce County Hazard Mitigation Plan are presented for review. Please contact: Lou Dooley, Program Coordinator, at 253 798-2209 or ldooley@co.pierce.wa.us for questions or comments.

Pierce County has developed a hazard mitigation plan. Hazard mitigation planning is the process of determining how to reduce or eliminate the loss of life and property damage resulting from natural and human-caused hazards. The process involves four basic phases.

  • First, organize resources which include identifying and organizing members of the community as well as the technical expertise required during the planning process.
  • Second, develop a risk assessment which includes identifying the characteristics and potential consequences of hazards.
  • Third, develop mitigation strategies that contain prioritized mitigation goals, objectives, and actions to help avoid or minimize undesired hazard effects.
  • Finally, develop a method of implementing the plan and monitoring its progress.

A mitigation planning team has been created with professionals from many areas of Pierce County including: Department of Emergency Management, Facilities Management, Risk Management, Economic Development, Planning and Land Services, the Executive's Office, Geographic Information Systems, and Public Works Water Programs.
