Planning Grant History
In 12/2007, Washington State had a declared disaster for Major Flooding based in the Chelalis/Centralia area. Based on this disaster, even though it was not in Pierce County, there was money available for jurisdictions to either apply for Hazard Mitigation Project Funding or Hazard Mitigation Planning Funding.
Pierce County Department of Emergency Management (DEM) applied for Planning Funding to update Natural Hazad Mitigation Plans for eight Pierce County Jurisdictions. These jurisdictions all have existing Hazard Mitigation Plans that either have expired or are about the expire and they were interested in reviewing and updating their plans. An application was completed for $90,000 with a Federal Match of $22,500.
In December 2008, Washington State was hit with another disaster, a snow storm (DR-1825). This delayed the executing of all the grants.
In January 2009, Washington State was hit with yet another disaster, a flood disaster (DR-1817). This delayed the executing of all the grants to date.
In Spring of 2009, Washington State Emergency Management Division (EMD) awarded grants for DR-1734 the December 2007 Flooding, and Pierce County DEM was a recipient of one of those grants for this project.
In June 2009, Grant Number E10-018 was executed by Washington State Emergency Management Division and Pierce County Department of Emergency Management.
The Region 5 Hazard mitigation Plan - Phase III Update project team had their first meeting to kick-off the project in November, 2009. The project is scheduled to be completed by June, 2010.
