Region 5 Hazard Mitigation Plan - Phase III Updates

Pierce County Department of Emergency Management has updated the Hazard Mitigation Plans for eight existing jurisdictions. Rather than developing new plans in the county, this project is reviewing and updating eight existing plans that expired after their initial five year timeframe.

The eight jurisdictions participating in this planning effort include:

  • City of Bonney Lake
  • City of Sumner
  • East Pierce Fire District #22
  • Riverside Fire District #14
  • South Pierce Fire District #17
  • Firgrove Mutual Water Company
  • Clover Park School District
  • Sumner School District

Hazard Mitigation planning is the process of determining how to reduce or eliminate the loss of life and property damage resulting from natural and human-caused hazards.

Planning Progress as of June, 2010:

The Planning Team held their last meeting in April and a few individual meetings in May, 2010. Each jurisdiction has completed all of their documentation for their individual plans and all sections have been completed for the nine jurisdictions. Most of June was spent finalizing documents, formatting, proof-reading and last minute editing. Also in June, meetings were held with all jurisdiction Elected Officials to review the plans and gain permission to send the plans to State EMD and FEMA for their approval. All jurisdictions approved their plans and the final draft of the Region 5 Hazard Mitigation Plan - Phase III Updates was turned into Washington State Emergency Management Department on June 29, 2010.

The individual Plans have been reviewed and approved by both the Washington State Emergency Management Division and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The jurisdictions have adopted their individual plans via resolution. At that time all documents will be printed and plans will be considered complete and adopted for the next five years.

Most of these sections will be available upon completion by going to this link.

The Benefits of Mitigation Planning include:

  • Averts loss of life and injury to people,
  • Reduces damage to public and private property,
  • Lessens expenditure of resources and exposure to risk for first responders,
  • Reduces costs of disaster response and recovery,
  • Accelerates recovery of communities and businesses affected by disasters, and
  • Enhances community resiliency.
