Do not Burn

Fire safety burn bans in unincorporated Pierce County are declared by the Fire Marshal during long periods of dry weather, normally during July through October. Notice of a burn ban is always given to the news media for broadcast.

Information regarding Washington State regulated air quality burn bans can be obtained through the PUGET SOUND CLEAN AIR AGENCY. They can be reached by calling 800-552-3565 ext. 6 or accessing their web site at www.pscleanair.org. This agency regulates burning as it relates to environmental and/or pollution laws; such as, restrictions on fireplace/woodstove burning and outdoor burning.

Note: If you live in an area where outdoor burning is allowed (according to the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency guidelines), you may need to get a burning permit from your local fire district. The telephone numbers for the fire districts in unincorporated Pierce County can be found in your local telephone directory or on our web page.

Remember, outdoor burning in approved areas is restricted to natural vegetation from the burn site only. The burning of garbage, paper, or other refuse is strictly prohibited. Call the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency for more information regarding air quality burn bans.

Pierce County Public Works has listed more alternatives to burning on their website at www.piercecountywa.org/recycle.
