 Driving positive change
Pierce County is driving positive change with the installation of two new Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations available for public use on Pierce County government campuses. The Level 2 units work for Chevrolet Volt, Nissan Leaf and all other electric cars that use the J1772 standard.

 More options, Less pollution
EV Chargers for public use are located in the public pay lot adjacent to the new jail and at the Annex near the LESA Communications tower. The units were funded through a grant from Western Washington Clean Cities as part of their Petroleum Reduction program.
Cost for use is $3 per charging session, payable with a credit card on the charger unit. The chargers shut off automatically when a battery is fully charged.

 Leadership and Innovation
Three more charging stations are being installed at the County-City Building in downtown Tacoma, exclusively for County use, to support the addition of three new Nissan Leafs to the County fleet.
The County-use stations are funded through grants by ECOtality as part of the EV Project, an initiative helping reduce our dependance on foreign energy sources.

Zero emission electric vehicles help the County work towards cleaner air and water goals. The cars represent a good taxpayer investment too, through higher resale values.
Long term budgeting is improved since electricity prices are less volatile than gas, and maintenance costs (no oil changes!) are reduced.
In addition to providing a valuable customer service, the project helps spread clean transportation technology access, acceptance and viability. More charging stations encourage consumers who may have range concerns, while fleet purchases help drive down vehicle prices.
