Crystal Judson was born April 24, 1968 to Lane and Patty Judson. She was the eldest of two girls. The Judson family enjoyed a happy home life and remained very close to their daughters into their adult years.

Crystal grew up in the greater Tacoma area. She attended Gray Junior High School and Mt. Tahoma High School. She was an excellent student. In her off time, she was an ice skater and a ballet dancer.

Crystal graduated from the University of Washington with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice. After college, Crystal worked as a legal assistant in Pierce County District Court. It was during this time that she met and married then Tacoma Police Officer David Brame. Crystal resigned her position with District Court in 1994 in anticipation of the birth of her first child.

During the course of their marriage, Crystal and David Brame had two children, Haley and David, Jr. Unfortunately, the marriage was a very unhappy one. Crystal suffered years of psychological and physical abuse at the hands of her husband.

Ultimately, Crystal took steps to end the marriage by filing for divorce. She had great hopes of a safer and happier future for herself and her two children. Tragically, on April 26, 2003, her estranged husband, then Tacoma's Chief of Police, fatally shot Crystal and then himself.

This terrible tragedy shook the Tacoma/Pierce County community to its core. As a way to honor and remember Crystal, government leaders agreed to name the newly established Tacoma/Pierce County Family Justice Center after Crystal.

In the lobby of the Crystal Judson Family Justice Center hangs a plaque to honor her memory. It reads as follows:

'Crystal Judson Family Justice Center. Dedicated To The Memory of Crystal Judson. May All Who Walk Through These Doors Find Strength, Courage and Hope.'

Crystal's parents, Lane and Patty, have become vocal advocates for change and improvement to law enforcement response to domestic violence, particularly officer involved domestic violence incidents. The memory of their daughter lives on in the name of the family justice center and in the work the Judson's continue to do on behalf of domestic violence victims everywhere.

Crystal's two children are being raised by Crystal's sister, Julie and her husband. Despite traumatic circumstances and significant loss, Haley and David continue to heal with the love and support of the entire Judson family.
