  This program recruits volunteers to provide transportation for low-income seniors who have no other transportation options. Income must be below approximately $1,000 per month for an individual or $1,500 for a couple. Contact person is Kathmiri.

• Shuttle UP

  Free door-to-door transportation for seniors (61+) in University Place and Fircrest to shopping, medical appointments and lunch. Itineraries and locations are pre-set for shopping and lunch. Must be independently mobile or aided by a caregiver. Registration required. Service offered through the University Place Senior Center.
  
  
• Home Helpers Program at Lutheran Community Services

  This program recruits volunteers to provide transportation and companionship to homebound seniors.

• Pierce Transit Shuttle

  Service for individuals who live close to a regular Pierce Transit bus route but are unable to ride a regular bus due to a medical condition or disability. The person must apply for the service. There is a minimal charge for each ride. Restrictions apply.

• Beyond the Borders: Connecting with Pierce Transit in South Pierce County
  Call (800) 562-0336 or (253) 798-2864 to find out if you are eligible. Once eligible, all rides must be requested at least 24 hours in advance, during regular business hours (Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm). Call Paratransit at (800) 651-6057 to reserve a ride.
  If you are a senior, a person with a disability, or low income resident living in rural Pierce County, you may be eligible for free transportation from home. Beyond the Borders connects riders with Pierce Transit fixed-route buses or the ADA accessible SHUTTLE. Riders may also connect with Sound Transit, King County Metro, or Intercity Transit (from rural Pierce County to Yelm and Olympia). Visit www.piercecountyrides.com for more information.

  Paratransit provides transportation to medical appointments that are being paid for by a DSHS Medicaid medical coupon. A medical coupon is needed to pay for the Paratransit transportation services. Restrictions apply. Call extension 735 for Interpretive Services for Medicaid recipients.

• Senior Center Vans
  Call your local Senior Center
  A few senior centers have vans that provide transportation to and from the center. Some even take the seniors on special shopping trips to local stores. The Lighthouse Senior Center ((253) 591-5080) and the Beacon Senior Center ((253) 591-5083) are two of the centers in Tacoma that provide these services. Clients must be 55 or older and pre-registered with the senior center to access this service. • Pierce Transit Bus (Call for route information)

  Trips cost $1.75 each way, 75 cents with a Senior Regional Reduced Fare Permit. For individuals who have never taken the bus or are nervous about riding it, Pierce Transit provides a class designed to help the rider feel more comfortable about using the bus. Call for information.
