2010 Employee Incentive and Recognition Standing Ovation Award
The Ferry Technology team received a Standing Ovation Award in the Innovation category for their work on integrating six distinct technology upgrades to improve Pierce County Ferry operations and reduce costs. Chuck Buzzard and Xuejin Ruan of GIS were recognized for their Ferry Tracker and Captain's log applications which provide automated ferry location tracking and information.
2010 IAEM-Global Technology & Innovation Award
Pierce County Department of Emergency Management won the International Association of Emergency Managers Global Technology & Innovation Award for its Emergency Information Portal, which provides first responders and other emergency management partners with a 'one-stop shop' of mapping, logistics management, and crisis communication information. DEM partnered with Pierce County GIS to develop this portal.
2010 URISA Exemplary Systems in Government Distinguished System Award
Pierce County GIS received a Distinguish System Award in the Single Process Systems Category for its GIS Online Budget System through the URISA program. This award program recognizes outstanding system applications that result in improved government services through efficiency and access.
2009 Employee Incentive and Recognition Standing Ovation Award
Linda Gerull received a Standing Ovation Award in the Customer Service category from the Employee Incentive and Recognition committee in 2009. The nomination was made by Mary Schmidtke from the Pierce County Auditor Office. In Mary's words, 'Pierce County is better at what is does because so many of our own county staff as well as external partners are Linda's customers and have benefitted from her excellence. She always delivers far beyond what is requested and way beyond expectations.'

2008 Washington GIS Conference Awards
Pierce County GIS won recognition in 2008 from the Washington Chapter of Urban and Regional Information Systems Association (WAURISA) in the map poster contest:

  • Winner of the Best Professional Poster Category - GIS Is To Space What History Is To Time by Jenee Nash and Brandy Riche
  • Third Place in the Best Professional Map Category - How Green Is Your Commute by Patricia James and Ross Heasty
2006 National Association of Counties Acts of Caring Award
Pierce County's GIS and the Department of Emergency Management won the National Association of Counties (NACO) Acts of Caring Award for its Neighborhood Emergency Team program. This program teaches citizens about how to develop neighborhood emergency plans for potential disasters. The program also includes a crime prevention component, which partners with the Pierce County Sheriff Department.

2004 Geospatial Information Technology Association Speaker Award
Pierce County's GIS manager, Linda Gerull, received a Geospatial Information Technology Association (GITA) Speaker Award in 2004. The GITA Speaker Award program is based on ratings from conference attendees and is awarded to the top 5 percent of all speakers. Linda won the award based on her excellent presentation, Innovative GIS Business Strategies to Do More With Less, given at the GITA 27th Annual Conference. GITA (http://www.gita.org/) is a nonprofit educational association serving geospatial and technological professionals.

2004 Washington URISA GIS Person of the Year
Pierce County's GIS manager, Linda Gerull, received the GIS Person of the Year award from the Washington Chapter of the Urban and Regional Information Systems Association (WAURISA). Linda received the award in recognition of her long-term commitment, excellent work and leadership in the field of GIS technology.

2004 National Association of County Information Officers Awards
Pierce County GIS won several awards in 2004 from the National Association of County Information Officers (NACIO), which is affiliated with the Association of Counties (NACO). Awardees include:

  • Cort Daniel -- An Excellence Award for CensusView 2000
  • Jared Erickson -- A Meritorious Award for Pierce County First Source
  • Pierce County GIS -- A Meritorious Award for the GIS Map Gallery
  • Paul Fly -- A Meritorious Award for the Graphic Design of Business Cards for Websites
  • Linda Gerull -- A Meritorious Award for Community Events for GIS Day 2003

2003 Washington Recreation & Parks Association Spotlight Award
DiscoverParks, developed by Pierce County GIS, won the 2003 Washington Recreation & Parks Association Spotlight Award for Best Web Site. Michael Payne developed the site and Paul Fly created the park maps, images, and GIS files.
