Chief Deputy Fred Wist leads the Juvenile Division, which prosecutes all offenders between the ages of eight and seventeen who commit felonies and misdemeanors within Pierce County, including cases referred by the Washington State Patrol, the City of Tacoma, and seventeen other municipalities.
From traffic offenses to homicides, deputy prosecutors review file and prosecute all of these cases. The Juvenile Division staff work together in collaboration with members from law enforcement, Juvenile Probation, the Clerk's Office and Juvenile Court to professionally handle a large volume of cases in a fast-paced environment. In 2011, the Juvenile Division received more than 4,100 cases for review. Of these cases, 1,530 were charged and 2,200 were referred to the Diversion Unit of the Probation Department for intervention and services.
In an effort to handle the complex and sensitive issues presented by sexual assault, the Juvenile Division has a designated deputy with specialized training to prosecute these cases from the point of first review through every step in the process. With the tireless efforts of victim advocates, these vulnerable victims and their families receive the support and assistance they need. |
