The Misdemeanor Section is responsible for prosecuting all misdemeanor and gross misdemeanor offenses committed in unincorporated Pierce County and the incorporated cities of Edgewood, University Place and Dupont. These cases are heard in Pierce County District Court Number One in downtown Tacoma. Team Chief Kevin Benton leads a team of 14 attorneys, two legal interns, nine legal assistants and three victim advocates.
The two primary areas of focus in the Misdemeanor Section are domestic violence and DUI prosecution. The Domestic Violence Unit is located at the Crystal Judson Family Justice Center. The center provides a safe location where all the needs of victims are met through the collaboration of government and community-based agencies. Deputy prosecuting attorneys and victim advocates specializing in domestic violence issues handle all domestic violence cases from precharging through disposition and sentencing. More than 1000 domestic violence cases were charged in 2010.
The DUI Unit, located in the County-City Building, charges more than 2500 cases of drunk driving each year. Law enforcement is committed to the apprehension of drunk drivers and emphasis patrols on behalf of deceased victims are a regular occurrence with the Washington State Patrol and other area agencies. Attorneys in this unit receive specialized training on DUI related issues, which are constantly changing. While DUI prosecutions are the focus of this unit, these attorneys must also handle all other criminal traffic and non-traffic offenses. |
