Heritage Ballfields

Located between Rogers High School and Zeiger Elementary School, Pierce County and Puyallup School District officials first broke ground for the Heritage Recreation Center on January 14, 2005. The completed project fulfills a county vision going back three decades. Tom Cross, the county's first parks director, believed in joint-use parks and recreation facilities and pointed to the site between Rogers High School and 94th Avenue East as an ideal location.

Built for $8 million on 40 acres, the complex includes:

  • one lighted baseball field
  • four lighted softball fields
  • six soccer fields (one with lights)
  • concessions/restroom building
  • children's play area
  • 468-space parking area that serves the center and nearby Rogers High School and Zeiger Elementary School for their events and activities.

The construction project was a Pierce County Parks and Recreation and Puyallup School District partnership with the county putting up the construction dollars and the school district committing land and operation dollars. Heritage Recreation Center is available for School District activities during the school day while Pierce County Parks and Recreation Department schedules the facility for Parks and Recreation activities and community use in the evenings and weekends.

Heritage Recreation Center is linked to the South Hill Community Park via the 1.6 mile paved Nathan Chapman Memorial Trail. The site is also within the South Hill Heritage Corridor, with Pioneer Trail history markers at the site will describe its historical significance. The corridor was dedicated in October 2001 on the occasion of the 148th anniversary of the Longmire-Byles wagon train crossing over the Naches Pass Trail through South Hill.
