In 2010, the Pierce County Council requested that the Pierce County Park and Recreation Services Citizens' Advisory Board (CAB) and the Open Space Task Force (OSTF) evaluate the creation of a Metropolitan Park District as a potential long term dedicated funding mechanism for park and recreation services in unincorporated Pierce County.

Both the CAB and OSTF recommended creating a new metropolitan park district as a means of enhancing and improving access to park and recreation facilities and programs, open space, and trails in the unincorporated area and small cities and towns.

In 2011, the Pierce County Council established the Park District Leadership Task Force, to further explore the metropolitan park district concept and to determine whether citizen interest and support exists.

In undertaking a comprehensive review of the formation of a metropolitan park district the Task Force will:

  • Solicit public opinion and conduct public outreach
  • Develop a recommendation to Pierce County Council for a ballot measure in November 2012 or 2013
  • Provide input and guidance of a non-profit park foundation
