In 2010, the Pierce County Council requested that the Pierce County Park and Recreation Services Citizens' Advisory Board (CAB) and the Open Space Task Force (OSTF) evaluate the creation of a Metropolitan Park District as a potential long term dedicated funding mechanism for park and recreation services in unincorporated Pierce County.
Both the CAB and OSTF recommended creating a new metropolitan park district as a means of enhancing and improving access to park and recreation facilities and programs, open space, and trails in the unincorporated area and small cities and towns.
