Eligible employees of Pierce County Government participate in a retirement system administered by the Washington State Department of Retirement Systems (DRS). Employees and the County contribute jointly.

In addition, employees have the option to contribute to a choice of IRS 457 deferred compensation plans.

Eligible Pierce County employees participate in one of the following DRS systems.

System Eligible Positions At Pierce County
Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) The majority of retirement-eligible, regular positions in Pierce County, such as Office Assistant, County Attorney, or Civil Engineer.
Law Enforcement Officers' and Fire Fighters' Retirement System (LEOFF) Commissioned law enforcement officers in the Sheriff's Department, such as Deputy Sheriff and Sergeant.
Public Safety Employees Retirement System (PSERS) Employees in pre-defined public safety occupations, such as Corrections Deputy, Adult Probation Officer, and Juvenile Detention Officer.

DRS offers seminars and workshops which include information about benefits specific to the employee's plan, as well as general retirement information. Pierce County has scheduled several PERS3-specific seminars and workshops throughout the year on location in Tacoma for the convenience of employees.

  3. A Potential Retiree FAQs information sheet has been prepared which answers frequently asked questions relating to regular employees considering retiring from Pierce County government. The sheet includes information about health and dental plan continuation, payoffs, procedures for notifying the County and DRS of your retirement to ensure smooth processing, and more.
