Word on the Street: Improvements to 176th Street East (14th Avenue East to Waller Road East)

What's Happening
We're improving 0.98 miles of 176th Street East from 14th Avenue East to Waller Road East (CRP 5536). Improvements, designed to improve safety and relieve traffic congestion, include:

  • Expanding to four lanes and paved shoulders with a raised median or U/left-turn lane at designated locations.
  • Adding concrete curbs, gutters and sidewalks.
  • Adding street lighting.
  • Improving the traffic signals at 14th Avenue East and 22nd Avenue East.
  • Adding an enclosed storm drain system as well as stormwater treatment and storage facilities.

The 176th Street East corridor improvements also include the following County Road Projects (CRP's):

  • CRP 5471 - B Street East to 14th Avenue East
  • CRP 5537 - Waller Road East to 51st Avenue East
  • CRP 5762 - 1000 feet east of Canyon Road East to Gem Heights Drive East is currently under construction.


Roadway Section


July 2009

  • Engineering: Geotechnical work is continuing for drainage facilities. Wall and barrier types and location are being analyzed. Construction plans are at 60% completion.
  • Land: All offers to purchase property have been made, and we are in active negotiations with the owners.


  • 2003 to 2010: Design engineering, plan development, estimates, environmental permitting: approximately 75% complete; remaining efforts will be accomplished when additional funds become available.
  • 2007 to 2010: Acquire right-of-way property and easements; approximately 50% complete; remaining efforts will be accomplished when additional funds become available.
  • Construction: To be determined, subject to available funding.

How does the money get spent?

  • Engineering: $1.3 million
  • Right-of-Way Acquisition: $3.5 million
  • Construction: $12.7 million

Where does the money come from?

  • County Road Fund and 2nd Real Estate Excise Tax: $2.9 million
  • Other: $0.3 million
  • Unfunded: $14.3 million
