Commercial Development Plan Review and Permitting
Engineering staff are responsible for the review of all commercial and industrial projects within Pierce County that may or may not have an impact on the sewer system in unincorporated Pierce County.
Commercial and industrial uses are centrally reviewed for possible connection to the county's sewer system, ensuring that all development regulations related to sanitary sewer services are met.
Almost 45 percent of all sewer lines installed in the county's sewer service area have been designed and constructed by private developers to support their residential and commercial projects. Engineering staff review all privately-designed collector systems, building sewers, and pretreatment devices associated with commercial development projects for compliance with Pierce County Standard Plans and Details.
Sewer Utility Capital Improvement Projects (CIP)
Engineering staff also design and prepare project plans and specifications for county sewer projects.

Private Commercial Sewer Systems
Some sewer construction within private roads are private systems, not maintained by the county. However, engineering staff review ALL proposed commercial sewer systems for compliance with the county's standard plans and details.
Pretreatment Program
All commercial and industrial sewer users are reviewed to ensure conformance with Pierce County's Pretreatment Program. The pretreatment program regulates levels of contaminants discharged into the public sanitary sewer system by new and existing users.
On-Site Septic Systems
On-site septic systems may be allowed for projects that fall outside of a sewer service area or are located in rural areas. All proposed on-site systems require the review and approval of the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department prior to permitting and installation.
