Residential Development Plan Review and Permitting
Engineering staff are responsible for the review of all residential development projects in unincorporated Pierce County. The projects are centrally reviewed for possible connection to the county's sewer system, ensuring that all development regulations related to sanitary sewer services are met.
Almost 45 percent of all sewer lines installed in the county's sewer service area have been designed and constructed by private developers to support their residential and commercial projects. Engineering staff review ALL public and privately designed collector systems for compliance with Pierce County Standard Plans and Details.
Sewer Utility Capital Improvement Projects (CIP)
Engineering staff also design and prepare project plans and specifications for county sewer projects.

Private Residential Sewer Systems
Most sewer construction for residential subdivisions and multi-family developments placed within private roads are private systems, not maintained by the county. Any sewer construction within public roads become part of the county's public sanitary sewer system.
On-Site Septic Systems
On-site septic systems may be allowed for projects that fall outside of a sewer service area or are located in rural areas. All proposed on-site systems require the review and approval of the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department prior to permitting and installation.
