The Parkland/Brookdale Interceptor project will replace about 5,000 feet of existing 30-inch and 8-inch diameter sanitary sewer pipe with a new 72-inch interceptor pipe. About 750 feet of new 36-inch diameter pipe will also be installed.

An interceptor is a sewer line that receives wastewater from multiple collector pipes and transmits it to a wastewater treatment plant. Interceptors are usually 15 inches or greater in diameter.

Alignment

(see map below) The project begins on Brookdale Rd. E at Golden Given Rd. E, where an existing 72-inch interceptor pipe currently ends. This project will extend the 72-inch pipe west along Brookdale Rd. to its intersection with 8th Ave. E.

The new pipe will follow Brookdale Rd. E to where it merges with 131st St. E. and continue west to A St. S, where the new pipe will end. To connect to the rest of the sanitary sewer network, a new 36-inch diameter pipe will be installed along A St. S and connect to the existing pipe at 133rd St. E.

The existing pipe along 133rd St. E between 8th Ave. E and A St. will not be affected by the project.

Current Status

The project is in the final engineering phase. An alternative for the sewer pipe alignment has been developed. County survey crews may periodically be in the area to gather data needed to design the project.

The Problem

The existing 30-inch diameter Brookdale interceptor is nearing its capacity of 7 million gallons per day. High concentrations of hydrogen sulfide gas from naturally-occurring bacteria have corroded the inside of the pipe as well.

Also, the existing pipe is located in an area affected by high groundwater levels. Groundwater infiltrates the sewer pipe, diminishing its capacity to carry wastewater.

The Solution

The best way to address capacity, corrosion and groundwater infiltration issues is to replace the old pipes with a new, larger one. The project will replace existing pipes with a 72-inch diameter interceptor pipe along Brookdale Rd. from Golden Givens Rd. E to A St. S.

Shifting the interceptor north from 8th Ave. E/133rd St. E to 131st will place it in an area less affected by high groundwater. The new pipe will be made of high density plastic that resists groundwater infiltration better than the current pipes.
