This holiday season give gifts that show you care about friends, family, and the environment!

More ways to make the season bright

gift giving

...and don't forget to TREECYCLE!

Memories last longer than material objects and bring us closer together. Here are some gift ideas that will brighten their day:
  • Gift cards
  • Movie tickets
  • Museum and zoo memberships
  • Season tickets to sporting events or the symphony
  • Plant a tree in someone else's name
  • Make a gift certificate for babysitting, washing the car, cleaning the house, or whatever else will make someone happy!

I reuse previous years Christmas Cards by cutting them up and using them as gift tags.
-Beverly, University Place

Rather than using a regular paper gift bag, use a grocery store recycle tote. This will encourage the recipient to use it when they shop.
-JeAnette, University Place

We try not to give 'things.' This year we gave ski lift tickets, help with repairs, and a trip. The few 'things' we gave were useful, like much needed clothing.
-Shari, Tacoma

Make your own wrapping paper by buying roll of butcher paper and stenciling it with water-based paints. This is a fun family event; it doesn't cost much and is totally recyclable.
-Cynthia, Lakewood

We save baby food jars all year and make ornaments and snow globes out of them for Christmas gusts. We use milk cartons to box them.
-Jennifer, Fife

I wrap presents in the Sunday comic strips. I have done this for years.
-Rick, University Place

We save salad and plastic take out containers all year and fill them with cookies for the nursing home.
-LL, Tacoma

We no longer send bulky packages. We buy electronic gift cards that do not even have to be printed out to be used.
-Kathleen, Lakewood

During the holidays, we often decorate our Christmas tree with natural things like pine cones from outside and strings of popcorn.
-Kelsey, University Place

For holiday gatherings we use real dishes, not disposables that fill up the trash. It may take a bit longer to clean up but everyone feels special using glasses and china.
-Jarna, Bonney Lake

I purchase various prints of Christmas fabric when it's on sale & make drawstring bags, using ribbon for the drawstrings. It's great for those hard to wrap packages and looks pretty under the tree. After Christmas, we just flatten the bags & put them away for next year.
-Gen, Lake Tapps

I keep the cardboard from some packages for garden mulch or for my worm box. The worms love the cardboard, and it helps cut down on the fruit flies in the summer.
-LuAnn, Steilacoom

Many years ago, I made cloth Christmas bags to wrap presents in. We reuse them every year, and rarely have to use paper to wrap a gift.
-Lynne, Puyallup

We recycle all our leftover foods feeding them to our three pet chickens!! The things they don't eat we compost. We use a potted natural tree instead of buying one every year. After Christmas, we just put it outside to keep growing in its pot all year. When it's December, we bring it in the house and decorate it!!
-Marcela, Anderson Island

All my gifts are home canned goods from my garden. The recipients don't get clutter because it gets eaten, and they give me back the jars to refill next year.
-Yvonne, Puyallup
