THE SAFE, SECURE WAY TO DISPOSE OF RX DRUGS
The Pierce County Sheriff's Department urges you to dispose of your unneeded or expired prescription drugs in a safe and secure way. Please do not flush medicines. This can pollute our waterways and streams, as well as our drinking water.

Residents can bring expired or unneeded medicines to the South Hill Precinct, the University Place Police Department lobby, or the Edgewood City Hall lobby and put them into the secured lock box.

South Hill Precinct:
271 John Bananola Way East in Puyallup
Lobby hours: Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Phone number: (253) 798-3278.

University Place Police Department:
3631 Drexler Drive West Suite A in University Place
Lobby hours: Monday-Friday 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Phone number: (253) 798-4058.

Edgewood City Hall:
2224 104th Ave East in Edgewood

Why is this program important?

Many pharmaceuticals are getting past our waste water treatment plants and getting into our drinking water. Scientists with the United States Geological Society conducted a study of over 130 rivers, streams, and other waterways in the U.S. and found the following pharmaceuticals in over 80 percent of those tested:

  • Antibiotics
  • Anti-depressants
  • Birth control pills
  • Seizure medication
  • Cancer treatments
  • Pain killers
  • Tranquilizers
  • Cholesterol-lowering compounds

Properly disposing of unused prescription medications also keeps them out of the hands of our children.
