Sergeant Frank Clark, working with paramedics, performed CPR on Deputy Kent Mundell, allowing paramedics to concentrate on Kent's injuries. Sergeant Clark's assistance allowed paramedics time to prepare Kent for transport and ensured he survived the crime scene.

Corrections Deputy Jesse Boyle while on duty responded to a noise and found an inmate choking. Officer Boyle quickly reacted by performing the Heimlich maneuver and dislodging the obstruction and restoring the inmates air flow.

Reserve Deputy James Fulcher while on duty March 18, 2009, provided life saving steps to control bleeding when a fleeing suspect attempted suicide. He applied direct pressure to the wound, administered first aid and reassured the suspect in a calm, patient manner until paramedics arrived.

Sergeant Nick Hausner and Deputy Bill Foster responded to a citizen's report of a house fire in Eatonville on March 26, 2009. Deputy Foster broke in a door to find the house filled with smoke while Sergeant Hausner requested that fire respond. They entered the smoke filled home and crawled on the floor calling out to anyone inside. Deputy Foster's call awoke two individuals who were then instructed to climb out a window to safety. The actions of Deputy Foster and Sergeant Hausner were instrumental in removing the two citizens from the burning home; and thereby risking their own personal safety

Deputy Joseph McDonald responded to a suicidal call and found the subject locked inside a garage with the car engine running. Deputy McDonald broke into the garage and found the air fowled and subject semi conscious. Deputy McDonald was able to drag the subject from the garage and call for medical aide.

Deputies Gene Abuan, Nate Condreay, Jesse Hotz Montgomery Minion, Kevin Redding, and Darren Witt worked together as the Dive and Marine Services Unit to rescue a man clinging to a capsized boat in Harts Lake on December 19, 2009. The victim was close to slipping under the water when he was pulled to safety. The coordinated action of this team of deputies resulted in the saving of a life and is within the finest traditions of the Pierce County Sheriff's Department.

Corrections Sergeant Steven Breiner, Corrections Deputies Lynette Rankin, John King, Pete Wilson, Deneen Dixon, Chris Cooley, and David Paul directly intervened in four suicide attempts by one inmate over three days. Their professionalism and compassion saved this inmate's life.

Deputy Kent Mundell distinguished himself through a conspicuous act of heroism above and beyond the call of duty for his actions during a domestic call on December 21, 2009. Deputy Mundell engaged the armed suspect after his partner had been wounded and the suspect opened fire upon him. Kent stopped the suspect and through his actions saved the lives of his partner and three others in the house. His actions were in the finest traditions of the Pierce County Sheriff's Department.

Sergeant Nicholas Hausner distinguished himself through a conspicuous act of heroism above and beyond the call of duty for his actions during a domestic call on December 21, 2009. Sergeant Hausner, while seriously wounded by gunfire, was able to summon back-up and medical aid for his partner who had been grievously wounded. Sergeant Hausner moved to assist his partner with no regards for his personal safety. His actions were in the finest traditions of the Pierce County Sheriff's Department.

Deputy Brian Heimann distinguished himself through a conspicuous act of heroism during a domestic violence response. Deputy Heimann pushed the victim out of the line of fire of the armed suspect and positioned himself in front of the victim as he confronted the armed suspect.

Deputy Walter Kent Mundell, Sergeant Nicholas Hausner
Deputy Walter Kent Mundell, while responding to a domestic violence call, was confronted with an armed suspect who opened fire upon his partner. Deputy Mundell responded courageously and with force, inflicting grievous bodily harm to the suspect, stopping the suspect's advance. Deputy Mundell received several wounds from gunfire which ultimately resulted in his death. Deputy Mundell's selfless actions were within the highest traditions of the Pierce County Sheriff's Department.

His incident command skills resulted in numerous agency resources being marshaled for a swift and thorough investigation and the identification of those involved.

Deputy Mark Fry demonstrated meritorious service through his professionalism, tenacity and investigative skills developed a County-wide Pseudo-Ephedrine data tracking system with retail and pharmaceutical sales establishments. This system has led to multiple investigations being developed.

Sergeant James Heishman demonstrated meritorious service through his professionalism, exemplary leadership skills, and demonstrated sense of compassion during an extremely difficult time for the Department. Sergeant Heishman provided calm and determined guidance for his detachment and the department as he assisted with the tragic loss of Deputy Mundell and the serious injury of Richelle Heacock. Sergeant Heishman provided the drive for a community project to remodel the Heacock home to enable the Heacock family to support Richelle in her recovery. His efforts are in keeping with the finest traditions of the Pierce County Sheriff's Department.

Larry Carlson, Larry Wallace
Citizens Larry Carlson and Larry Wallace while working at Pierce Transit heard police sirens and found a suspect running through their maintenance shop. Mr. Carlson and Wallace confronted the suspect and detained him as the pursuing deputy arrived. Mr. Carlson and Wallace demonstrated courage and civic responsibility to their community by assisting law enforcement.
