Pierce County is ideally located, and our transportation system enables convenient links to the rest of the country - and the rest of the world. Interstate 5 slices through Pierce County from north to south, linking us to Canada and Mexico. Interstate 90 is less than 30 miles north of the Pierce County border, providing a direct link to the Eastern states. In addition, other major highways include Washington 512 and Washington 167 which provide a north-south alternative route through the Puyallup Valley. Washington 16 links Tacoma to Gig Harbor and the Olympic Peninsula via the Narrows Bridge and Hood Canal Floating Bridge.
Sound Transit's commuter rail service provides Sounder trains between Tacoma and Seattle via Puyallup, Sumner, Auburn, Kent and Renton. The Tacoma Link light rail project links the Tacoma Dome to the city's Theater District. This free service, with convenient stops at the University of Washington Tacoma and Convention Center, has been a boost to commuters and visitors alike.
Air travel is also convenient. Seattle-Tacoma International airport is just 20 miles away. And we are linked by water to the rest of the world via the world-class Port of Tacoma.
