Pierce County's Prevention Program strengthens community collaboration to address the factors in a community that increases the risk of substance abuse. Primary goals include efforts to educate and mobilize communities to reduce substance abuse among youth so that they may thrive and reach their full potential in a safe and healthy environment. Prevention services are funded based on need, research and readiness to benefit. Schools, the Puget Sound Educational Service District, community coalitions, and other key community members are recruited for mutual prevention-based efforts.

County Staff:

Renee Tinder, Prevention Specialist (253) 798-4529
Hae Man Song, Prevention Specialist (253) 798-6101

Pierce County's Prevention Program is aligned with the Division of Behavioral Health and Recovery (DBHR). DBHR uses a research-based 'risk and protective factor' approach to prevent alcohol and other drug abuse. Limiting risk factors while strengthening and increasing the protective resources will help to reduce substance abuse and create healthier individuals and communities. See Risk and Protective Factors for Substance Abuse.
