A public nuisance vehicle is defined as meeting three of the following four criteria:

1. Is extensively damaged.
2. Is apparently inoperable.
3. Is three years old or older.
4. Has an approximate fair market value equal to the scrap value.

The full definition of a public nuisance vehicle can be found in Pierce County Code, Chapter 8.10

Removing public nuisance (junk) vehicles:

Pierce County Responds provides a program for identification and removal of junk vehicles on private property. Pierce County Responds' Code Enforcement Officers can offer the following assistance:

Towing Costs:

  • Many tow operators will haul vehicles free of charge when the value of scrap metal is high, however, this is subject to change.
  • Any towing fee incurred is the responsibility of the property owner/tenant where the vehicle is located. Pierce County Responds may pay half of the towing fee through our Cooperative Abatement Program.
