Overview

This project provides for repair to the existing Lower Puyallup River Levee by protecting about 200 linear feet of eroding bank on the right bank of the Puyallup River at river mile 5.2 in the City of Fife. This work will include constructing a matrix of precast concrete dolosse, logs, slash, planting, and other work.

A combination of logs and concrete eight foot dolosse will be used and placed along the bank line to anchor the logs and provide bank protection. The dolosse are designed to 'self settle', so in-water excavation is not necessary and the roughness of the structure will encourage silt deposition that will rebuild the bank. Eventually most of the dolosse and logs will be covered in sediment and match the appearance of the surrounding bank line. The logs will protrude slightly and provide fish cover. Native vegetation will also be planted at the site to increase the banks structural integrity and other environmental benefits.

Conceptual Rendering
Note: rendering is directly after construction. Settlement and silt deposits are expected to completely cover the dolosse after the first high water.

What is a Dolos?

A dolos (plural dolosse) is an unusually-shaped large interlocking block of concrete, weighing up to 20 tons, used for protection of seawalls and to preserve shore earthworks from erosion.

The dolosse for this project weigh approximately 8 tons and measure about 8.5' by 8.5'.
