Project Description:
Historically, high groundwater and seasonal rains have caused 139th Street (a public road) to flood. Pierce County bought three properties and removed the affected homes. Those properties will remain in a natural state and fenced to prevent illegal dumping. At a later date, we may take community input on possible other uses of these vacant properties.
In December 2011, the asphalt cul-de-sac was replaced with porous concrete, which allows water to infiltrate into the soil below. The porous concrete cul-de-sac will be raised to an elevation that provides access for the remaining property owners. The project cost $350,000 and has been nominated for a Concrete Association Award. This project will be continually monitored, because it is the first use of porous concrete on a public road in Pierce County.
