dewey the water droplet Hi Kids!

I am Dewey the Water Droplet. I am here to teach you what happens to the water that drips off of houses and trees, runs through yards, down streets, and into storm drains. It does not just disappear - it flows into our streams, lakes, rivers, and eventually Puget Sound. When the water runs over hard surfaces, like roads and driveways, it picks up pollution. That pollution ends up in our waterways and poisons fish and wildlife.

Complete my activity book: The Adventures of Dewey the Water Drop to learn what you can do to help clean up our local waterways and earn your Drain Ranger badge of honor!

Dewey says, 'I'm a Drain Ranger!'

Together we have the power to clean up rivers, lakes, streams and Puget Sound! Just a few simple changes can make a huge difference!

  • If it's not rain, it doesn't belong in the drain - don't ever pour anything down the storm drain.
  • Conserve water - use less at home to save more for the fish.
  • Scoop the poop - bag dog poop and put it in the trash.
  • Use a fish-friendly car wash - wash your car at a commercial car wash or on your lawn so water soaks into the ground.
  • Soak up spills - use cardboard or kitty litter to soak up oil and chemical spills, and then throw them in the trash.
  • Use compost - start a compost pile for your food and yard waste, then us it to make your yard beautiful without chemicals.

Volunteer drain marking events are a great volunteer activity for children school age and older.

  • Mark drains at your school as a classroom project.
  • Mark drains with your scout troop to receive environmental volunteer hours.
  • Mark drains in your neighborhood with your family or neighbors.

Drain marking reminds people that the water that flows into our storm drains is released without treatment to local streams, rivers, lakes, and eventually Puget Sound. To learn how you can get involved in drain marking, go to the drain marking webpage.
