General Description of the Muck Creek Basin:
Muck Creek Basin is located within the Nisqually River Basin (WRIA 11), in the southwestern area of the county. The basin is approximately 93 square miles in area, stretching approximately 18 miles from east to west, from the Nisqually River to east of Graham.
The basin includes Muck Creek, and its two major tributaries, Lacamas Creek and South Creek. There are over 50 miles of creek within the basin. Approximately 1/4 of the basin, and the lower 14 miles of the creek (the mainstem) are located within Ft. Lewis military reservation boundaries.
The basin is within the area designated as Rural by the County Comprehensive Land Use Plan and has a rural character, although there has been a lot of growth. Most development in the basin has been in the Graham area.
The creek supports a large Chum Salmon run, and a few Coho Salmon and Steelhead. Productive fish habitat is currently limited to the lower portions of the creek because areas of the creek upstream of the Fort have a tendency to dry.
