South Prairie Creek knotweed removal to be completed during 2010

Pierce County Surface Water Management and the City of Lakewood have received funding from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and the Salmon Recovery Funding Board to support a grant program focused on improving conditions for salmon in our watersheds. The Puyallup/Chambers-Clover Small Grants Program provides small grants to organizations, schools and individuals wishing to enhance water quality and habitat in the Puyallup River and Chambers-Clover watersheds. Grants are available in amounts up to $2,500.

Successful applications support the goals outlined in the Pierce County salmon recovery strategy and the Puyallup River and Chambers-Clover watershed council Action Agendas. Examples of projects include riparian planting projects, stream clean-up events, development of educational materials or purchase of equipment and supplies for projects that benefit water quality or habitat.

We are not currently accepting applications, but hope to offer grants again in late 2011. If you have any questions, please contact Melissa Paulson, Pierce County Surface Water Management, at (253)798-4686.

Project funded under this program focus on improving conditions for salmon by addressing water quality or habitat issues in the Puyallup or Chambers-Clover watersheds. Projects which also build partnerships or community involvement are most competitive for funding.

Grant applications submitted for the 2010 grant round were evaluated on their benefit to salmon, partnerships building, certainty of success and other criteria. Nearly $39,000 was awarded to 17 projects in the Puyallup and Chambers-Clover watersheds. Final project results will be presented at a Puyallup/Chambers-Clover Small Grants Program event in Fall 2010.

Collectively, these projects resulted in:

  • 1868 native trees and shrubs planted
  • Seven acres of invasive plants cleared
  • 350+ volunteers involved
  • 2233 school age and adult students educated
  • ~750-1000 property owners contacted

An open house is planned for early 2011 to showcase these projects.

The Puyallup/Chambers-Clover Small Grants Program is made possible by a grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and the Salmon Recovery Funding Board. The NFWF grant was awarded to the WRIA 10/12 Pierce County Lead Entity for use to improve salmon habitat and water quality in the Puyallup and Chambers-Clover watersheds. Pierce County Surface Water Management and the City of Lakewood provided matching funds for this program.
