A key recommendation of the adopted Key Peninsula/Islands Basin Plan was that achieving and maintaining extraordinary water quality in West Pierce County would be accomplished by keeping open public and private tidelands for recreational, commercial, and tribal shellfish harvest. This is because state standards for human consumption of shellfish requires excellent water quality, which benefits people and fish in so many ways. Water Quality & Watersheds staff administer the Shellfish Partners public outreach campaign and a grant and loan program for repairing failing septic systems in shoreline areas.
