Jozef Sabovcik

Jozef Sabovcik is a six-time Czechoslovakian figure skating Champion, two-time European Champion and 1984 Olympic Bronze Medalist in Sarajevo.

Hebegan skating at the age of 6 when his grandmother enrolled him in lessons in Bratislava, Slovakia, where he grew up. Jozef, an only child, was raised almost exclusively by his grandmother because his parents were both ballet dancers in Vienna.

Under the Czech Communist system Jozef was groomed to compete in the 1984 Olympic Games in Sarajevo. Along the way he won numerous Czech National Championships and toured with Scott Hamilton and Brian Orser. The three talented skaters became good friends.

In 1986 Jozef landed a quadruple toe loop, the first in competitive skating history. However, the judges said he touched on his landing. Therefore, Kurt Browning was awarded the distinction of landing the first quad in competition at the 1988 World Championships.

The 1986 World Championships were the beginning of the end of Jozef's competitive skating career. He retired from amateur skating soon after the competition because of chronic knee problems that eventually led to four surgeries.

We are proud and honored to feature Jozef in this year's production of Reflections on Ice.

Choreographers: Heidi Sullivan and Stephanie Rowland

When she was three years old, Heidi Sullivan began skating in Sprinker Recreation Center?s learn-to-skate program. Through the years as her skating skills developed, she successfully competed at the Regional, Sectional and National levels. Heidi is a U.S. Figure Skating double gold medalist and a graduate of the University of Washington.

In 1993, Heidi began coaching at Sprinker Recreation Center. Since that time, she has coached beginning level skaters through senior gold medalist including regional, sectional and Junior National competitors and Disney On Ice show performers. Heidi is privileged to have been a part of ?Reflections On Ice? since the very first show and was assistant choreographer for ten years.

Stephanie Rowland has had a passion and love for figure skating since the age of three. Stephanie is a U.S. Figure Skating double gold medalist, Pacific Northwest Champion and Sectional level competitor. She has also performed solos and ensemble work in many professional ice shows. Stephanie is proud to be on staff at Sprinker Recreation Center and has been coaching figure skating since 2001.

With over 20 years of skating experience, Stephanie has trained skaters from beginning through Pacific Northwest Championship level. She was excited to become an assistant choreographer for ?Reflections On Ice? in 2003. Since that time, Stephanie has continued to work as a choreographer for the Lakewood Winter Club and Sprinker Recreation Center.

Heidi and Stephanie consider themselves blessed to have benefited from the ice skating program at Sprinker Recreation Center and to be life-long members of the Lakewood Winter Club. Overjoyed with the renovation of the ice arena at Sprinker, Heidi and Stephanie are looking forward to many more years of coaching in Tacoma?s premier ice skating facility.

As artistic directors and choreographers for the 2012 production of ?Reflections On Ice?, Heidi Sullivan and Stephanie Rowland are not only thrilled but privileged to give back to all figure skaters and community members who have supported the Lakewood Winter Club and the Sprinker Recreation Center. They remain committed to producing an entertaining and exciting ice show that will inspire ice skaters and fans of all ages for many years to come.

The ice show was instituted as a way of giving our skaters an experience outside the rigors of competitive life. It is enriching and rewarding for both viewers and participants. In fact, there are five past cast members currently touring in professional shows.

The 100 member cast was chosen after tryouts and auditions in late August. They have continued to practive a minimum of two times per week to get ready for the February performances under the direction of Kathy Wainhouse.

Kathy is the Technical Show Director and has directed the past nine productions at Sprinker Recreation Center. When not involved with the technical aspects of the show, Kathy is the Director of Skating for Sprinker. She oversees and develops the competitive skating program and is the Pacific Northwest area representative to the Professional Skaters Association. Kathy is a leader in the development of coaches education within the region and hosts many seminars for the Professional Skaters Association.

If you have never attended one of these shows you are in for a real treat. Sprinker's Ice Arena is transformed into a professional set with state of the art light and sound, costuming and props.
