North Warren Street Bridge in Roy to be replaced; four-month closure starts Aug. 12

The North Warren Street Bridge that crosses Muck Creek in Roy will be closed for four months starting Aug. 12 so the bridge can be replaced. North Warren Street will be closed between Water Street West and Cedar Street West during the work. Motorists will be detoured along State Route 507 and East Gate Road.

The new bridge will be 36 feet wide, including the shoulders, and approximately 70 feet long; 14 feet wider and 18 feet longer than the existing bridge. The approaches to the bridge will be reconstructed and repaved, and the bridge will have paved shoulders.

“The new two-lane bridge will be constructed with prestressed, precast concrete girders, which will reduce the amount of time necessary for construction and therefore reduce the length of the road closure,” said Kraig Shaner, Pierce County Public Works and Utilities bridge engineering supervisor. “The additional width will provide more clearance for vehicles crossing the bridge, while the increased length will provide a larger opening for high creek flows.”

The existing steel bridge, made from an old railroad flatcar, was built in 1977 and carries approximately 3,632 vehicles a day.

The project is being managed by Pierce County for the City of Roy. Quigg Brothers Inc. is the general contractor. The construction costs are approximately $1.2 million. The project is funded by the Federal Bridge Replacement Program.
