December 2016

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Merry Christmas! As my time as your Pierce County Council District 2 Representative comes to a close on Dec. 31, 2016, I want you to know it has been an honor to serve as your Pierce County Councilmember. In this final newsletter you will read about some exciting Pierce County programs and great family events.

During my past eight years on the Council, I was pleased to serve on the board of the Crystal Judson Family Justice Center, where I worked to protect women and children who are the victims of domestic violence. Also, I have kept my promises to you to help make Pierce County a great place to live, work and play by supporting our farms and farmers, building the new accessible playground at Meridian Habitat Park, and supporting funding to complete two missing links of the Foothills Trail.

Furthermore, the Council recently passed the 2017 Budget and once again made public safety our number one priority. We have added five new Deputy Sheriffs, increased the budget for the Corrections Bureau, added electronic monitoring services for the pre-trial services program, provided additional support for South Sound 911 dispatch services, and funded two positions in the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for pro-active property crime cases.

Please click here for more 2017 budget details.

I value the trust you have placed in me to represent you on the Pierce County Council. As always, if there is anything I can do to assist you, please feel free to email me at Joyce.McDonald@co.pierce.wa.us or call me at my office 253-798-6694 until Dec. 31, 2016. After Dec. 31, you can reach me down at the State Legislator as the 25th District Representative! I look forward to hearing from you.

Best Regards,

Joyce

Keeping You Safe: Pierce County Warning Systems

Success in saving lives and property is dependent upon clear and timely dissemination of emergency information to persons in threatened areas.  Pierce County Emergency Management has various systems in place to ensure that residents are notified in the event of a small or major emergency.

Pierce County ALERT
Free service that allows you to sign up and receive notifications about emergencies that may affect the locations you care about. This service allows fire, police and other emergency response agencies to send out accurate and up-to-date information to residents. Click here to sign-up for Pierce County ALERT.

AM 1580 Emergency Radio System
The AM 1580 Emergency Radio is an All Hazard information tool used in the Puyallup River Valley. This tool will be used for Mount Rainier volcanic hazards as well as any local or regional emergencies. The Emergency Information Radio Station can be heard from the City of Orting, through the Puyallup River Valley to the City of Fife.

Lahar Warning Siren Test
The Lahar Puyallup warning siren will be sounded on the 1st Monday of every month. This month’s warning will be sounded on Monday December 5th at noon and last for approximately 2 minutes.

Annual Farm Tour Program

Councilmember McDonald continues to highlight the importance of our Pierce County farms and making sure they have every chance to succeed. See highlights of the Farm tour or visit the Farm Fresh webpage to see how you can support our local farmers. Click here to view PCTV story on the tour.

The Agriculture Program was established in 2013 through the adoption of the Ag Initiative sponsored by the Executive Office and Council.  Councilmember Joyce McDonald was the lead sponsor of this initiative.

The purpose of the tours has been to provide an opportunity for farmers and County representatives to participate in thoughtful dialogue about what farmers need to succeed, and how best the County can support this endeavor. The overall goal of the Program is to KEEP FARMERS FARMING!

Each tour was conducted in a different part of the County, offering a glimpse into the diversity of the County’s agricultural landscape and farmers.

Most importantly, however, has been making the connection with the farmers on a personal level and learning about the day to day challenges and successes that they face each day.

The Pierce County Agriculture Program has been built, in a large part, upon the recommendations and suggestions from the farmers on these tours resulting in:

  • Steps by the County to develop and implement action items based on farmer recommendations.
  • Improved coordination between the agencies and departments working on agricultural issues.
