Tacoma-Pierce County WA2WA

The Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber 2019 WA2WA Trip was in mid-May. It was an outstanding conference in the nation’s capital with South Sound business leaders and civic officials.  I advocated with the Chamber delegation on a number of issues including transportation and infrastructure, trade, fisheries, defense, energy, workforce, health care, military procurement and economic development. Additionally, I served on a specialized panel regarding national defense policy and the role of JBLM in meeting our national security mission. I was joined on the panel with:
  • U.S. Congressman Adam Smith (WA)
  • U.S. Congressman Denny Heck (WA)
  • Paul Cramer, Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army (Installations, Housing & Partnerships), U.S. Army
  • Andrew Napoli, Assistant for Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC),U.S. Army
  • LTG Guy Swan, III, Retired U.S. Army, VP for Education, Association of U.S. Army

Presentation of D-Day Remembrance Day proclamation

The Pierce County Council passed unanimously Resolution 2019-71,proclaiming June 6, 2019 as D-Day Remembrance Day.  This day recognizes and remembers the 75th Anniversary of D-Day, which was the launch of Operation Overlord during World War II, and the liberation of Europe from Nazi occupation.  The resolution was received by CPT Elijah Bales and First Sergeant Stephen McNally from JBLM’s 2nd Ranger Battalion. The 2nd Rangers scaled the cliffs at Point du Hoc on D-Day to neutralize the German's coastal artillery.

A time of gratitude to our military and first responders

I had the privilege of being in Washington D.C. to participate in National Police Week with special events like the Peace Officers Memorial and the Candlelight Vigil, in honor of our law enforcement officers and those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. I was joined by a delegation from Pierce County which included the Pierce County Sheriff Paul Pastor and Executive Bruce Dammeier. We were all humbled to remember the incredible life and sacrifice of Deputy Daniel Alexander McCartney, who’s name was memorialized on the National Law Enforcement Memorial Wall this year.

I had the great honor to participate in two Mighty 6th district events on Memorial Day weekend, at JBLM and at the City of DuPont.  Thankful for all our community events that were provided to our families to remember and honor the fallen.
